Gunmen attack Plateau community, kill more than 20, injure many others
Gunmen attacked the Binper hamlet in Plateau State's Mangu Local Government Area, killing around 20 people and injuring numerous more.
Residents claim that the attack happened on Monday, August 18, 2026, between midnight and the early hours of Tuesday.
According to Daniel Musa, an eyewitness who spoke with our reporters on Tuesday, the heavily armed attackers walked from house to house, breaking in and assaulting sleeping people.
He said: “Our village came under attack last night and in the early hours of today, Tuesday, by heavily armed persons.
“They were moving from house to house, opening the doors of people who were sleeping and slaughtering them.
“As of this morning, we have confirmed over 20 deaths, while several others sustained serious injuries and some people are still missing.”
Another resident who verified the attack, John Dalyop, called the situation appalling.
“We expected the new Commissioner of Police in the state to act quickly and go after those responsible,” he said.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki praised the agency's staff for their professionalism and quick response.
He also advised drivers, especially those who operate heavy-duty and articulated vehicles, to perform thorough mechanical inspections prior to travelling, paying particular attention to the state of their braking systems.
