Gunmen kill NSCDC officer, kidnap daughter in Kogi

During an attack on Odo-Ere, the headquarters of Yagba West Local Government Area in Kogi State, armed men suspected of being bandits allegedly killed Mr. Ayo Olukotun, a member of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and kidnapped his daughter and several other locals.

According to locals, the gunmen invaded the neighborhood at 8:30 p.m. on Monday, firing intermittently and frightening the locals, many of whom fled for their lives.

In the midst of the chaos, the attackers allegedly broke into the NSCDC officer's home, shot him, and kidnapped his daughter and other victims into a nearby forest. Olukotun was taken to a hospital soon after the incident, according to a community source, but upon arrival, it was determined that he was dead.

“Mr. Olukotun was taken to the hospital immediately after the incident, but sadly, he was confirmed dead on arrival. His remains have since been deposited in a mortuary,” the source said.

Yagba West Local Government Area Chairman, Hon. Tosin Olokun denounced the assault, calling it sad and tragic.

Olokun, who also chairs the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) branch in Kogi State, stated that the NSCDC officer's passing was a devastating loss for his family, the Odo-Ere community, and the local government region as a whole.

“We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident. On behalf of the government and people of Yagba West, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr. Ayo Olukotun, the people of Odo-Ere and all those affected by this attack,” he said in a statement issued on Tuesday through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Adeyemi Babarinde.

In order to support continued efforts to combat criminal activity in the area, the chairman of the council advised citizens to maintain their vigilance and to keep giving security agents reliable information.
