Ibadan airport set to commence international flights 2016
According to the Oyo State Government, international flights will start operating at Ladoke Akintola International Airport in Alakia, Ibadan, by June 2026.
In a statement released in Ibadan on Monday, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, affirmed this.
Oyelade said the international terminal, now at 15 percent complete, is projected to be ready for international flights by June 2026. He went on to say that the airport was being upgraded to international standards.
According to the commissioner, part of the renovation entails expanding the runway from 2,400 meters to 3,000 meters.
In order to accommodate wide-body aircraft, he added, the runway will also be expanded from 45 to 60 meters. To increase safety, firefighting response has been improved and airfield illumination has been updated to CAT C.
“Facilities for Customs, Immigration, and other essential agencies are also being put in place,” Oyelade noted.
By the end of this year, he predicted, local flight operations will resume. The runway, apron, taxiway, and blast pads are now 55% finished, he said.
He said that after these improvements are accepted by the relevant regulatory bodies, local flights would be able to restart.
According to Oyelade, the development is in line with the government's plan to update the airport in Ibadan.
“By improving our infrastructure, we enhance domestic travel and prepare for international operations,” he said.
