Imo governor approves N104,000 minimum wage for workers
Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma has authorized a new N104,000 minimum wage for state employees. This was disclosed by Uzodimma on Tuesday evening at the Government House in Owerri during a meeting with representatives of several labor unions.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the minimum salary was hiked from N76,000 to N104,000. Also boosted were the minimum pay of doctors from N215,000 to N503,000, while those of instructors in tertiary institutions were lifted from N119,000 to N222,000, among others.
He claimed that since his government came to power, Imo residents had had to deal with a number of issues, such as insecurity, the COVID-19 pandemic, economic hardship brought on by reform measures, and disagreements over the minimum wage and the elimination of subsidies.
Uzodimma said: “We tried as a government to always put it behind our mind that there is no way any government will do well if it doesn’t have a friendly and cordial relationship with the organised labour.
“When workers are paid well, productivity rises, families are happier, and the local economy grows.
“This is our way of investing in Imo people. Government believes in stimulating political and economic activities, carrying bureaucrats along, and making sure that workers’ welfare was highly respected,” he said.
The state's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has risen from N400 million to more than N3 billion every month, according to Uzodimma.
He said we were getting between N5 billion and N7 billion in allocations in 2020, but now we are getting N14 billion.
