Indian police nab two Nigerians for cybercrime

Two Nigerians, Modebe Joseph and Sunday Okonkwo, have been detained by Indian authorities on suspicion of being members of a global cybercrime syndicate that is said to have hacked cooperative banks.

During a concerted security operation, the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police Commissionerate's cybercrime squad apprehended the accused in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

The Times of India said that Joseph, 42, and Okonkwo, 35, were allegedly collaborating with Solar Spider, a cyber threat outfit that purportedly targets financial institutions with inadequate cybersecurity infrastructure. Officers from the Cyber Crime Police Station and other security agencies collaborated to make the arrests.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Shavya Goyal, detectives think the individuals are connected to criminal organizations in South Africa and Nigeria and are a part of a larger international cybercrime network.

According to Goyal, the group allegedly transferred over ?7 crore, or nearly ?1 billion, from a designated bank account on the weekend of March 7-8.

She claims that the transaction was completed over the weekend while the bank was closed, which is thought to have been a tactic to postpone detection and give the suspects time to transfer the pilfered money.
