Kano government prohibits importation of scrap materials

The Kano State administration has prohibited the entry of waste materials and scraps from the northeastern states into the state due to concerns about the spate of explosions that have been reported in the state in recent weeks.

Materials, particularly from the North-Eastern regions impacted by the Boko Haram War and Insurgency, were temporarily halted, according to retired AVM Ibrahim Umaru, the state's commissioner for internal security and special services, who made the announcement.

The decision was given by AVM Umaru at a meeting with the National Association of Scraps and Waste Dealers of Nigeria (NASWDEN) leadership.

Retired AVM Umaru was quoted in a statement by Muhd Idris, the Ministry's Director of Public Relations and Enlightenment, which claimed that the directive was a follow-up to the recent bombing at the scrap material warehouse along Kofar Ruwa and Western Bypass Road, which claimed lives and damaged property.

He called on association members to create policies to stop these kinds of incidents and make sure that these scrap materials don't contain explosives before bringing them into the state.

“As Kano state will continue to protect your interest and your business, you should come up with a written policy and plans that will boost your business”, the commissioner added.
