Kano Governor Yusuf dumps NNPP
Abba Kabir Yusuf, the governor of Kano State, has formally resigned from the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP), claiming internal strife and a desire to put the welfare of the state's residents first.
Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director General Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano, announced the resignation in a statement on Friday.
The governor, with effect from January 23, 2026, sent a letter to the chairman of the NNPP in the Diso-Chiranchi Ward of the Gwale local government area of the state.
In the letter, Governor Yusuf thanked the party for providing him with a platform and support since he joined the NNPP in 2022. He also mentioned that he continued to be appreciative of the kindness and collaboration he received during his time with the party.
However, the governor blamed his decision to leave the party on protracted legal fights, internal conflicts, and leadership rivalries that have continued to undermine the party's structure at the state and federal levels.
He described the situation as becoming more and more irreconcilable, noting that the unsolved problems had widened divides inside the party, undermined internal cohesiveness, and caused anxiety among members.
Members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement have become divided as a result, with some supporting Governor Yusuf and others remaining faithful to Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the movement's leader.
