Kwara government shuts six establishments for noise pollution
Kwara State Government, on Monday, initiated clamp down on facilities where compliance with legislation on noise pollution has been determined to be unsatisfactory. During a tour of Ilorin, six establishments were closed due to their noncompliance with noise pollution regulations.
Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, who spoke after a tour of the Ilorin metropolis on Monday, noted that “we have been very diplomatic with business owners whose object of trade revolves around generating noise but we can no longer marry that with the discomfort it creates for members of the public, especially within residential areas”.
"Folding our arms may mean endorsement, so we have commenced the sealing of the relevant facilities where noise beyond those acceptable for normal human beings escape to the immediate vicinity," the Commissioner, who was represented by Dr. Abubakar Ayinla, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, revealed that the ministry had received numerous reports and complaints on a daily basis.
“Those who want to trade in noise should prepare well, sound-proof their facilities or stay within the stipulated guidelines that have been communicated to the managers of all such facilities,” the commissioner added.
Six of them were sealed on Monday, she revealed, and the ministry will keep up the exercise until the desired level of compliance that would minimize noise pollution was reached.
The Commissioner stated that "this is important for our health and general wellbeing" and urged the public and religious organizations to rigorously follow the noise level limit, which states that noise levels should not exceed 55 dB during the day and 40 dB at night.
