Labour party picks May 23rd for 2027 presidential primary

In advance of the 2027 general election, the Labour Party has scheduled its presidential primary on Saturday, May 23.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) representatives were there to watch the proceedings during the party's national executive council (NEC) meeting on Tuesday in Abuja, where the decision was made.

The party also approved important preparatory milestones in accordance with INEC's schedule for the 2027 polls, which sets January 16, 2027, for the presidential and national assembly elections, according to a statement released by Ken Asogwa, senior special adviser on media to Nenadi Usman, the interim national chairman.

He stated that the party will hold primaries for the governorship, senate, house of representatives, and state assembly on Friday, May 15, and submit its membership record to INEC by April 15.

According to Asogwa, the NEC meeting also approved the plans for the national convention on April 11 and the ward, LGA, and state congresses scheduled for March 26 to 31. The party took use of the event to discuss internal issues, such as the recent invasion of its national secretariat.

He stated the NEC suspended a number of members for alleged indiscipline, anti-party actions, and involvement in the secretariat incident, in accordance with recommendations from its peace, reconciliation, and disciplinary committee.

In order to update the party's database and increase transparency, the NEC of the party supported the ongoing hybrid membership registration effort, which combines digital e-registration with manual procedures in rural areas.

The board of trustees, the NLC and TUC leadership, Alex Otti, the governor of Abia, the interim national working committee, and Nenadi Usman, the national chairman, all received votes of confidence from the council.
