Lagos govt arrest 45 street beggars
During coordinated enforcement and mop-up operations conducted throughout the state, the Lagos State Government has arrested forty-five individuals involved in street begging in Alimosho, Agege, and Oshodi.
As part of the government's regular compliance and cleaning campaign, environmental enforcement agents conducted the arrests at multiple places.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, confirmed the occurrence on Tuesday and revealed the information through his official X account.
“As part of our ongoing enforcement and mop-up exercises across the state, additional arrests were recorded today,” Wahab stated.
He gave an account of the operation, pointing out that twelve beggars were picked up in Agege and seventeen were caught in Alimosho.
He continued by saying that further operations resulted in the arrest of six people in Oshodi and ten more in Alimosho.
Wahab clarified that the experiment was consistent with the state's stringent policy on street begging, which he characterized as a hazard to public safety and an environmental annoyance.
“Street begging along highways, medians and public spaces poses serious risks to both the individuals involved and other road users, while also undermining public order,” he said.
In order to maintain a cleaner, safer, and more organized environment throughout Lagos State, the commissioner reaffirmed the government's commitment to continuing enforcement actions.
