Lagos govt orders psychiatric tests for eighteen traffic offenders

The Lagos State Government has ordered the psychiatric evaluation of eighteen drivers who were found driving against the law.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority claims that the action is a component of their attempts to reduce reckless driving and bring order back to the state's roadways.

LASTMA said it had finalized plans to arraign 12 of the offenders and make sure they undergo mental health evaluations to determine their suitability for driving in a statement signed by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, on Saturday.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, was quoted as saying, “The enforcement of psychiatric assessments is not intended to stigmatise or punish.

“Rather, it is a necessary intervention designed to protect the general motoring public from individuals who exhibit reckless disregard for human life and lawful order.”

The psychiatric test, he continued, was consistent with international best practices in traffic psychology and law enforcement.

According to the agency, many drivers continue to disregard traffic laws despite continuous public education campaigns, which causes collisions, gridlock, and infrastructure damage.
