Lagos shuts public toilet, mall over illegal sewage release
By blocking a public restroom on Offin Road off Apongbon, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office, or LSWMO, has taken strong action against the state's illegal sewage discharge.
It was discovered that the facility was purposefully directing raw sewage into the public drainage system, resulting in an unpleasant smell and visible sewage flow throughout the neighborhood.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Water Resources and Environment, issued a statement on Tuesday stating that the act presented serious hazards to human health, constituted a public nuisance, and polluted the environment.
COSJANE MALL along Festac Link Road in Amuwo Odofin was also blocked for releasing untreated effluent into the public drainage system after several warnings. The measure was required to safeguard human health and stop additional environmental contamination.
“After several warnings, COSJANE MALL along Festac Link Road in Amuwo Odofin was also sealed for discharging untreated wastewater into public drainage system, constituting environmental pollution and threat to public health,” the statement added.
As previously noted, this enforcement is consistent with previous State Government activities of a similar nature. A public restroom on Savage Street in Ebute Metta was sealed on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, when authorities found that raw sewage was being pumped straight into the drain.
The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office claims that the discharge caused an unpleasant smell and sewage flow in the neighborhood, endangering people's health.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Water Resources and Environment, released a statement in which the State Government called such actions irresponsible and detrimental to public health.
The facilities were sealed to stop additional pollution and to safeguard the people who live in the impacted areas, according to the statement.
