LASTMA fires five, denotes nine officials over misconduct

Nineteen of its personnel have been sanctioned by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority for various misbehavior incidents that were documented in 2025.

This was revealed on Thursday in Lagos by Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, who stated that the punishments came after disciplinary measures authorized by the Lagos State Civil Service Commission.

He claims that nine police were demoted, five cops were fired, and the remaining staff members received harsh warning letters.

According to Bakare-Oki, in order to prevent abuses among officers stationed on Lagos highways, the authority has reinforced its internal monitoring mechanism.

He said, “We have been able to improve our surveillance unit, and on a daily basis, officers move out to check the excesses of our men on the road.

“The surveillance officers go out in plain clothes, like a mystery shopper, to identify our men who intend to operate against laid down guidelines.

“These are what we put in place to check the excesses of our men on the road.”

The head of LASTMA further stated that public complaints were taken seriously and that reports of wrongdoing were looked into in detail before disciplinary action was taken.

“We have a series of examples where our men are penalised whenever they are reported, and we do due diligence to ensure that we establish the truth.

“If our men are found wanting, they are always punished,” he said.

Bakare-Oki added that the authority was still dedicated to enhancing traffic control throughout the state in order to guarantee the unrestricted flow of automobiles and facilitate the transportation of people and products.
