At Ogunlana Junction, inner Ojuelegba, in the Surulere neighbourhood of Lagos, a passenger died after leaping off a moving commercial bus and colliding with a median pole.

Adebayo Taofiq, the director of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority's Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, revealed this in a statement released on Sunday.

A commercial Volkswagen bus with registration number LND 130 XR is said to have crashed into a median pole at Ogunlana Junction, inner Ojuelegba, near the Surulere Fallout neighbourhood.

According to preliminary security investigations, the bus driver was allegedly driving erratically just before the collision and was under the influence of alcohol.

“Motorists approaching from the rear were said to have exercised considerable caution in their attempts to avoid a collision with the erratically driven vehicle.

“In the ensuing pandemonium, a male passenger, apparently attempting to escape from the uncontrolled moving vehicle, jumped out of the bus and sustained grievous injuries upon impact with the ground.

“Tragically, the passenger subsequently succumbed to the injuries sustained in the incident. LASTMA personnel conducting routine traffic surveillance and monitoring along the Ojuelegba axis swiftly mobilised to the scene upon sighting the crash,” the statement read.

When LASTMA officials saw the collision, they quickly mobilised to the area while doing routine traffic surveillance and monitoring along the Ojuelegba axis.

In order to prevent a potential secondary collision, the officers promptly implemented emergency traffic management measures, secured the accident scene, and removed the severely damaged vehicle and the deceased passenger from the carriageway.

While representatives of the State Emergency Management Agency removed the deceased passenger's body, security guards from the Area C Police Division, Ojuelegba, provided security cover at the scene.

According to LASTMA, the incident served as another reminder of the possibly irreparable repercussions of running mechanically flawed vehicles on public roads, driving while intoxicated, and reckless motoring.
