Man sets himself on fire in Kano community

In Kano's Panshekara village, a young man named Suleiman Muntari lit himself on fire in the middle of the day.  According to an eyewitness, Muntari had symptoms of mental and emotional anguish before to the incident.

He was reported to have been observed muttering to himself while meandering down the road, which was considered an unusual indicator.  Shortly after, he lighted a match and doused himself in fuel.

“He said he wanted to go to Paradise. People around thought he was just talking out of stress or frustration. Nobody imagined he would actually go through with it,” said Saminu Isah, who was at the scene.

And he was already on fire before anyone could respond or put out him.  Despite efforts to assist, the fire spread too swiftly.

Some locals believe he might have been under the effect of drugs that changed his mental condition.

“It was obvious he wasn’t okay. You could tell from the way he was walking and talking. There was a strong smell coming from him, and he was shouting things that didn’t make sense,” Aisha Salisu, a woman who lives nearby, said.

Although local authorities have not yet responded, the unsettling image has spurred a fresh discussion over the surge in mental health issues among young people.
