Masquerade attacks, kill 24-year-old in Oyo
The Oyo State Police Command has opened a thorough inquiry into the death of Sefiu Kehinde, a 24-year-old man who was allegedly attacked by a masquerade during a parade in the Labiran neighborhood of Oyo State's capital, Ibadan.
Four of his accused accomplices are still at large, according to the command, while one suspect—identified as the Asoleke masquerade—has been taken into custody in relation to the event.
The event has rekindled worries about the violence connected to some traditional masquerade processions, which have caused fatalities and injuries in several regions of the nation in recent years.
A woman merely known as Mrs. Aderemi reported the incident at the Mapo Divisional Police Headquarters on Sunday, according to a statement released on Monday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka.
The statement claims that the complainant's older sister told her about the attack.According to the police, officers took the victim to a hospital as soon as they received the report.
The statement partly read, “She reported that earlier the same day, at about 4:00 pm, she received a distress call from her elder sister, informing her that a masquerade, identified as the Asoleke and its followers, while parading through Labiran area of Ibadan, allegedly attacked her younger brother, Sefiu Kehinde, with axes and cutlasses, inflicting severe injuries on various parts of his body.
“Upon receipt of the report, a team of Police operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer, Mapo Division, swiftly mobilised to the scene.
“The victim was immediately evacuated to the Hospital for urgent medical attention, where he was unfortunately confirmed dead on arrival by the medical doctor on duty.”
The command further stated that before the deceased's family took possession of the body for burial, investigators processed the crime scene.
