Minister Yusuf Sununu resigns to contest senatorial seat in Kebbi

Dr. Yusuf Sununu, the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, resigned from his position to seek a Senate seat.

Appointees running for elective office were instructed by President Bola Tinubu to step down by March 31, 2026, at the latest.

According to Sununu, who started working in Humanitarian Affairs in November 2024, his job was to improve the ministry's reputation.

When he assumed duty in the ministry, Sununu said, “We were sent here to redeem the image of this ministry. It is only when we redeem the image that we can have trust. Without trust, whatever we have done will be underrated and will not be seen as an impact.

“In doing this, we are going to provide leadership, guidance, and we will depend on you for your maximum input because you are the technocrats of the ministry, you are the owners of institutional memory, you are those who know the avoidable infractions.

“So, we must be able to work together to avoid those avoidable infractions. It’s only when we do that, then the mission and vision of Mr. President to eradicate poverty and provide effective humanitarian services will be appreciated by Nigerians and we are ready to do that.”

But in order to pursue his goal of becoming a senator in Kebbi State, he quit his job.

He served as the Minister of State for Education prior to being assigned to the Humanitarian Ministry.

Prior to being appointed as a minister, Sununu chaired the Committee on Healthcare Services while serving as the representative for the Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
