Mobile courts remand six for assaulting LASTMA officials

Six of the seven accused miscreants who attacked employees of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other sister agencies during a nocturnal enforcement operation along Airport Road, Lagos, have been placed under detention by the Lagos State Mobile Courts.

The Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) Corps, the Lagos State Task Force, security personnel, and LASTMA field officers participated in the enforcement activity, which was spearheaded by LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki.

Adebayo Taofiq, Director of LASTMA's Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, stated in a statement that the exercise was required in response to formal complaints filed by the Nigerian Airport Authority (NPA), which bemoaned the ongoing and illegal encroachment on its facilities by criminals and commercial bus operators in violation of current regulations.

Taofiq claims that the NPA's management reported the miscreants' and illegal operators' actions, which they claimed had caused a nuisance at the airport. There have been repeated reports of harassment, intimidation, and the taking of personal belongings from unwary members of the public.

Taofiq, however, said that despite extreme provocation and an immediate threat to their lives and public property, the cops used restraint during the assault, which resulted in an arrest.

According to the statement, the seven suspects were taken into custody and charged with four counts before the Chief Magistrate of the Lagos State Mobile Court on Tuesday.

He claims that one of the suspects was given bail after entering a not guilty plea, while the other six were placed on remand.

For a follow-up hearing, the case has been postponed until February 19, 2026.
