NAFDAC destroys substandard, expired products in Ibadan

In Ibadan, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), South-West Zone, started destroying unhealthy and inferior goods valued at more than N20 billion on Thursday.  The Moniya dumpsite in Ibadan was the yard of the devastation.

Prof. Christiana Adeyeye, Director-General of NAFDAC, stated during the exercise that the goal is to stop such hazardous products from reentering the market and causing injury.

Mrs. Florence Uba, the agency's Deputy Director, Pharmaceutical Division, Investigation and Enforcement, Apapa, Lagos, represented Adeyeye.

According to her, the goods being destroyed included phony and subpar medical supplies, unhealthy processed foods and food additives, dangerous cosmetics, and other out-of-date goods.  The agency confiscated the goods from producers, importers, and distributors, she continued.

“Also, up for destruction today are damaged and expired products voluntarily handed over by compliant companies, Non-Governmental Organizations, and Trade Unions.

“The estimated street value of the products planned for destruction is N20 billion.

“NAFDAC has been charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the health of the nation is safeguarded, and as such, it is committed to achieving its mandate,” she said.

She called on journalists, medical professionals, religious leaders, and community leaders to inform the people about the risks of using unregistered pharmacies and unlicensed drug dealers.
