NAFDAC seizes N47 million worth of fake products in Niger market

During a raid at the Ibrahim Babangida International Market in Suleja, Niger State, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control seized unregistered and counterfeit goods worth over N47 million.

A warehouse belonging to a man named Alhaji Ahmed was also sealed as a result of the operation, which targeted the distribution of prohibited and inferior items.

It was discovered that the facility had 25 kg bags of Monosodium Glutamate, a substance that is not allowed to be imported into Nigeria on a big basis.  In a statement posted on its X website on Tuesday, NAFDAC disclosed the specifics of the operation.

The agency said, “NAFDAC has sealed a warehouse in Niger State operated by one Alhaji Ahmed, for stocking large quantities of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) in 25kg bags, a product banned for importation into Nigeria.”

Numerous counterfeit oral care products with false or deceptive labels were discovered by NAFDAC officials.

These included additional unlicensed and possibly dangerous goods, as well as poorly copied replicas of well-known toothpaste brands.  Among the things seized were spaghetti that was prohibited in other countries.

“Among the confiscated items were counterfeit Oral-B toothpaste, banned foreign spaghetti, and unregistered products such as Bamboo Charcoal toothpaste, ‘Crogate’ and ‘Cloguide’ triple-action toothpaste, and adulterated ‘Colgate’ toothpaste,” the statement noted.

According to the agency, a number of the market's stores are currently being investigated while their inventory and compliance status are confirmed.
