NDLEA arrests 67-year-old Nigerian-British woman with cocaine in fake plantain
Mrs. Mary Barek, a 67-year-old Nigerian-British grandmother, was detained by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for reportedly trying to smuggle 13 kilograms of cocaine through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos using phony plantain peels.
The suspect, who works as a caregiver in the UK, was apprehended on Saturday, June 28, at the airport's Terminal 2 departure hall while trying to board a Virgin Atlantic flight to London, according to the agency.
The NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, said in a statement on Sunday that after a thorough examination of the suspect's luggage, 31 huge wraps of cocaine were found packaged with other food items and disguised as plantain hands.
Babafemi stated, “A thorough search of her bags resulted in the discovery of 31 big wraps of cocaine, which were packaged to appear like hands of plantain, weighing a total of 13 kilograms.
“In her statement, the elderly woman admitted full ownership of the recovered cocaine exhibits.”
