NDLEA nabs 80-year-old ex-convict for drug trafficking
Jeremiah Isaiah Nkanta, an 80-year-old man, was detained by National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) agents for reportedly resuming illegal drug trafficking just three years after being found guilty and imprisoned for a similar crime.
After being initially detained by the agency on December 14, 2022, Nkanta was charged and given a two-year prison sentence by a Federal High Court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. After serving his term, he allegedly started trafficking drugs again, according to NDLEA officials.
On Saturday, January 10, 2025, NDLEA agents followed reliable information to the octogenarian's home in Mmanta-Abak village, Abak Local Council, Akwa Ibom State, where he was taken into custody together with 5.7 kg of skunk, a type of cannabis.
Ani Onyebuchi Romans, a 37-year-old businessman, was apprehended by NDLEA agents on patrol along the Oron–Ibaka Road in Oron Local Council on Friday, January 9, in another operation in Akwa Ibom State. While traveling with full-body mannequins allegedly intended for his clothes business in Cameroon, he was arrested. A search of the mannequins turned up 5.3 kg of tramadol pills hidden within.
The suspect stated that he was going back to his home country of Cameroon following the Christmas and New Year's vacations. According to NDLEA, investigations showed that the drugs were transported to Cameroon for sale after being bought in Onitsha, Anambra State.
