Nigeria troops rescue 74 corps members from potential abduction in Borno

74 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were saved from potential kidnapping by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists along the Buratai–Kamuya road in Borno State by troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF), North East Operation Hadin Kai.

The corps members' cars broke down close to a well-known kidnapping hotspot on Tuesday night.  Around 9:05 p.m., the rescue occurred as a result of prompt action by soldiers who were notified via a military-monitored Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) system.

Security sources claim that a patrol squad was immediately dispatched when the CCTV showed suspicious activity involving three buses in the vicinity.

“On arrival, troops discovered 74 NYSC members — 36 males and 38 females — stranded after their vehicles developed mechanical faults. They were swiftly rescued to prevent a likely abduction attempt by Boko Haram or ISWAP elements operating in the area,” a military source confirmed.

It was reported that soldiers from the 7 Division Garrison had previously escorted the corps members from Maiduguri to Damaturu.  Nevertheless, they allegedly proceeded to Hawul Local Government Area after reaching Damaturu without informing Sector 2 Headquarters or securing an armed escort.

Further information revealed that the corps members were in Hawul on an evangelical mission at the time of the event.  The Buratai military camp is currently housing the rescued NYSC personnel while plans are being made for their safe transportation.

Within the same operations corridor, the same army rescued 86 kidnapped victims and detained 29 accused Boko Haram sympathizers just days prior to this occurrence.
