NLC demands N150,000 minimum wage for Lagos workers

After the Imo and Ebonyi governments raised the minimum wage, the Lagos State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress is calling for a minimum pay of N150,000 for workers in Lagos State.

Mrs. Funmi Sesi, the chairperson of the NLC's Lagos State Chapter, made the request on Thursday in response to the Imo and Ebonyi governments' hike in the minimum wage.

In order to keep up with economic realities, Sesi told the News Agency of Nigeria that Lagos State needed to raise the minimum salary for its employees from the current N85,000 to N150,000.

She claimed that Lagos had higher costs for utilities, lodging, transportation, and food than other states.

"The NLC is hopeful that all other state governments will emulate Imo and Ebonyi governments in the decision," the chairwoman said, describing the minimum wage rise for Imo and Ebonyi workers as a positive step for Nigeria's labor force.

“The time has come for an upward review of minimum wage in Lagos. At least someone has taken the bull by the horns and opened the space.

“No one can blame Governor Sanwo-Olu now if he implements a higher wage for Lagos workers, because we deserve a better wage and decent work conditions that will be commensurate with the economic realities in the country, especially in Lagos.
