NLC to stage nationwide protest over insecurity
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said that it will stage a statewide demonstration against the nation's insecurity on December 17.
At the conclusion of the NLC National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Lagos on Monday, a communiqué containing this information was released.
NLC President Joe Ajaero and Acting General Secretary Benson Upah signed the statement together. It said that the recent kidnapping of 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi was one of the urgent national and industrial concerns that the NEC discussed.
According to the statement, the NEC denounced the abduction and murder of school employees during the incident and denounced the removal of security guards from the impacted school before the assault.
It urged the federal government to secure all schools, especially those in remote and vulnerable locations, and termed the increase in attacks on schools as concerning.
In addition to calling for a prompt investigation and prosecution of those accountable for the security failings, the NEC decided to mobilize all NLC affiliates and state councils for the protest.
The communiqué said that the current strike by the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), the crisis in the tertiary education sector, and the resurgence of the Labour–Civil Society Coalition (LASCO) were among the other major topics covered at the conference.
It further stated that the NEC asked members to reconnect the party with working-class values, philosophy, and integrity and voiced concern about the current status of the Labour Party.
The communiqué also cautioned that increased industrial strikes in a number of areas, including health and education, could result from the Federal Government's inability to address insecurity and other urgent challenges.
It asked citizens to stand with workers in calling for a safer country, stating that workers' safety and wellbeing remained a major concern in NLC's campaign.
