Nnamdi Kanu's lawyers withdraws representation from case

The principal attorney for Nnamdi Kanu, the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Kanu Agabi, the former Attorney-General of the Federation, filed an application on Thursday to drop his involvement in the ongoing terrorism trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The Federal Government has charged Kanu with seven counts that touch on terrorism, and he is currently awaiting trial.

Agabi told the court during Thursday's hearing that he would no longer be defending the IPOB leader, adding that the defendant had chosen to withdraw the case.  Similarly, all of the Nigerian Senior Advocates who were involved in the case declared their intention to withdraw from it.

Confirming the news, Kanu informed the court that he will be defending himself for the time being, but that this could change in the future.

The defendant (Kanu) refused to have a lawyer assigned to represent him when the trial judge, Justice James Omotosho, asked.

Kanu, in the meantime, claimed that the court lacked the authority to try him when he opened his defense verbally.
