Nurses begin seven-day strike, ignore FG appeals

Despite the Federal Government's appeals, nurses working under the auspices of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives – Federal Health Institutions Sector (NANNM-FHI) have begun a seven-day warning strike today.

Following the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum given on July 14, 2025, requesting better working conditions, equitable allowances, and improved welfare for nurses across federal health institutions, the union stated the action, which started at midnight, was necessary.

Morakinyo Rilwan, the National Chairman of NANNM-FHI, said on Tuesday that the Federal Government did not interact with the association in a meaningful way within the allotted time.

“As far as we are concerned, there has been no communication from the government to this moment. That is why we are saying the strike is going on, and nothing is stopping it. Even if the government calls today or tomorrow, it won’t stop the strike. They had enough time,” Rilwan noted.

The demands of the nurses include the establishment of a dedicated nursing department within the Federal Ministry of Health, the introduction of a distinct wage structure for nurses, the raising of the core duty allowance, the modification of the uniform allowance, the upward revision of the shift allowance, and mass employment of nurses.
