OAUTH doctors begin indefinite strike

Due to unresolved welfare and workplace issues with the hospital administration, resident physicians at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) have started an indefinite strike.

A communiqué signed by President Dr. Martins, Jesunbo J., General Secretary Dr. Oladipo, Toyyeb B., and Public Relations Officer Dr. Oaihimire, Joel I., states that the decision was made at an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), OAUTHC, conducted virtually on June 20, 2026.

Following the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum previously given to the administration about welfare-related issues impacting its members, the association stated the congress evaluated developments.

The communiqué states that during the ultimatum time, members evaluated the management\'s response to the association\'s demands as well as the results of stakeholder interactions and interventions.

The doctors claimed that the management\'s formal June 17, 2026 answer, which cited CMD.25A/VOL.III/377, misrepresented the facts, agreements made, and the current status of the parties\' conversations.

However, after speaking with management, Congress recognized the reversal of the identity card attachment policy and the advancements achieved in processing members\' upgrades.

The association also pointed out that newly hired employees are free from paying for identity cards, but it insisted that identity cards are still institutional property and that the institution should cover the costs of their creation, rebranding, or reissuance.

The physicians also noted that workers hired in 2022 and regularized in 2024 were not eligible for the exemption even if they were not given identity cards when they started working.

The proposed changes to call-duty meal entitlements, according to the group, did not sufficiently accommodate all physicians who are officially on call throughout qualifying units and departments.
