Ogun govt adviced resident to relocate against flood occurrence
Residents in wetland and riverbank regions have been asked by the Ogun State Government to get ready for the Ogun River's overflow in the upcoming two weeks, from October 20 to November 3.
Mr. Ola Oresanya, the Environment Commissioner, issued a flood notice in Abeokuta on Monday that included this information.
Akute, Alagbole, Isheri, Magboro, Makogi, Orimerunmu, Iro, Kajola, and a portion of Abeokuta, namely Lafenwa, Enugada, Adedotun, Iberekodo, Akin-Olugbade, and Ago-Odo, were among the localities mentioned by Oresanya.
He explained that the alarm was a part of the government's ongoing efforts to reduce flooding in the state by issuing flood alerts on a regular basis.
“The overflow from Ogun river would rise as a result of controlled release of water from Oyan Dam due to heavy rainfall from up-north.
“This will increase the volume of water reaching the dam from that part of the country which will be compounded by increase in tidal level,” he said.
According to him, the waterflow into the dam would unavoidably push the dam to release water, which would have an impact on the surrounding surroundings. He advised locals to use cautious and prevent property and human casualties during that time.
Oresanya emphasized that people in the wetlands should relocate to higher ground or extend their stay for the time being because overflow is unavoidable, while locals should keep away from the riverbank.
In order to lessen the strain of the overflow on locals, he continued, the state government, along with the Ogun Osun River Basin Authority, has been dredging the Ogun River and opening up additional tributaries.
