Ogun State gives out refurbished clothes, shoes to communities
Residents of the state's Ipokia Local Government Area have received reconditioned clothing and shoes from Ogun State Government.
According to the administration, the program was a part of an effort to reach all 20 local government units in the state with its waste management project, known as the "Reuse and Reuse Program." Through charitable deeds and environmental sustainability, this aims to promote appropriate waste management.
The state Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, spoke at the flag-off ceremony on Monday at the Ipokia Local Government Secretariat. She stated that the distribution exercise was intended to improve community ties by turning items deemed waste into useful materials for those in need.
The commissioner, who was represented by Kayode Akinwande, Director of Environmental Quality Control, Water Regulatory Enforcement and Advocacy, clarified that the state government had renewed the items for reuse after they were donated by locals who thought they were rubbish.
“With this exercise, we want our people to understand that waste is not truly waste unless you waste it. What one person discards may bring joy to another.
“Residents should donate unused items through collection boxes placed at strategic locations across the state.
“After renewal, these items will be redistributed to those in need instead of ending up in waterways and drainage channels where they harm the environment,” he said.
Johnson Avoseh, the chairman of Ipokia Local Government, praised the initiative by the Abeokuta Rotary Club, the state government, and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.
He pointed out that in addition to helping the poor, the program tackles environmental issues that may have long-term effects on the community.
