Ondo uncovers plans for 50th anniversary
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the state's founding, the Ondo State Government has planned a number of events, such as a Jumat worship and a Thanksgiving service.
According to PUNCH Online, Ondo State, which has Akure as its administrative capital, was established on February 3, 1976, from the now-defunct Western Region of Nigeria.
In keeping with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa's vision for the state's future, the golden jubilee program was created to incorporate introspection, gratitude, intellectual discussion, and cultural celebration, according to a statement released on the state government's X account on Monday.
One of the main highlights of the festivities is a public lecture titled "Ondo State: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow," which is planned for Monday, February 2, 2026, at The Dome in Akure. The event is organized by a planning committee directed by Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti, the Secretary to the State Government.
“The lecture will be delivered by Prof Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, and chaired by Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, with Mrs Olu Verheijen, Special Adviser to the President on Energy, also speaking.
“Activities will begin with a World Press Conference on January 29, 2026, followed by a Jumat Service on January 30 and a Thanksgiving Service on February 1.
“On the anniversary day, February 3, 2026, Governor Aiyedatiwa will deliver a State Broadcast, after which a State Carnival featuring cultural displays and performances will be held at the Ondo State Sports Stadium,” the statement read.
Distinguished sons and daughters of Ondo State will be honored at a gala and award night at The Dome in Akure, which will mark the culmination of the festivities.
Residents, Ondo State friends, and indigenous people both domestically and abroad have been asked by the state government to take part in the golden jubilee celebrations.
