Professor Peter Olapegba has been named the University of Ibadan's new vice chancellor by the governing council. 

On Wednesday afternoon, Olapegba was named the institution's 14th vice chancellor.

Five of the shortlisted candidates were interviewed on Wednesday, according to Chief Bisi Akande, the university's pro chancellor. 

Olapegba emerged following the demanding exercise, according to Akande, a former governor of Osun State.

Akande said: “At the end of the exercise, two additional applications were received and this brought the number of the applicants to eight (8). On Tuesday, 21 July 2026, the Council interacted with all eight (8) candidates. 

“Today Wednesday, 22 July 2026, the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board interviewed the five (5) candidates shortlisted. At the end of a very thorough, transparent and highly competitive exercise, Professor Peter Olarnakinde Olapegba emerged as the best candidate for the position of Vice Chancellor”. 

The recently appointed VC was previously the DVC administration's Deputy Vice Chancellor.

It was discovered that Olapegba teaches at the Faculty of Social Sciences' Psychology department. On December 1st of this year, the new VC is anticipated to take office.
