Police arrest Akwa Ibom village head, recover AK-47 rifle
Chief Edet, the village chief of Asik Ubofa, a fishing community in Effiat Clan, Mbo Local Government Area, was taken into custody by Akwa Ibom State Police Command officers, who also found an AK-47 gun on him.
In a statement released in Uyo on Wednesday, DSP Timfon John, the Command's Public Relations Officer, revealed that the 60-year-old suspect was captured on Tuesday after reliable information connected him to the possession of an illicit firearm.
The statement claims that CP Baba Mohammed Azare, the Commissioner of Police, ordered officers to initiate a coordinated operation in order to confirm the intelligence and take appropriate action.
“Acting on the directive, detectives stormed the suspect’s residence on March 24, 2026, at about 10:15 a.m. During the operation, one AK-47 rifle and two empty magazines were recovered, and the suspect was arrested without incident,” the statement read.
According to the police, the suspect is being held while investigations are conducted to find out where the firearm came from, ascertain his motivations, and find potential collaborators for prosecution.
In its continuous efforts to rid the state of illicit weapons and criminal elements, the command characterized the arrest as a major breakthrough.
Additionally, it urged locals to keep assisting security authorities and praised the people for fast and reliable information.
The police reaffirmed their resolve to stop the spread of illicit firearms and cautioned anyone found in possession of them to turn them in or face the full force of the law.
