Police redeploy Abuja DPO over misconduct
The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ushafa Division has been ordered to be redeployed immediately by Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police Miller Dantawaye after a video went viral that showed him slapping a young teenager while making an arrest.
After video of the cop abusing civilians appeared on X (previously Twitter) on Tuesday, the incident provoked indignation. Nigerians widely criticized the video, calling the behavior aggressive and unprofessional.
SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Command's Police Public Relations Officer, stated in a statement on Wednesday that the commissioner deemed the officer's behavior intolerable and against the Nigeria Police Force's code of conduct.
“The Commissioner of Police strongly condemns the officer’s actions, which fall short of the high standards of discipline, civility, and professionalism expected of police officers,” the statement read.
Adeh went on to say that the officer had been moved back to headquarters till the incident's ongoing inquiry was completed.
“Consequently, the officer has been redeployed, and the situation is currently under investigation,” she said.
According to the statement, the commissioner emphasized that any misbehavior or misuse of authority will result in severe disciplinary action and cautioned all Divisional Police Officers and their subordinates to maintain professionalism and courtesy while carrying out their duties.
“While administrative disciplinary steps are being taken, CP Dantawaye reminds all DPOs and their subordinates that they must remain professional, courteous, and law-abiding in the discharge of their duties.
“He warns that any act of misconduct or abuse of power will attract severe sanctions,” the statement added.
