Police rescue victims as gunmen kidnap health workers in Akure hospital
Early on Saturday morning, armed gunmen raided a Primary Healthcare Center in Akure, Ondo State, kidnapping at least six medical professionals.
At around two in the morning, the attackers allegedly assaulted the institution in the state capital's Oke Ijebu neighborhood, catching patients and medical staff off guard.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen arrived in a car, broke into the building, and rounded up night shift medical staff.
Nurses, other vital medical personnel, and interns working at the center at the time of the incident were among those removed.
Some of the on-duty interns were also kidnapped, according to a patient who managed to flee the attack. She said there was minimal opportunity for resistance because the operation was quick and well-coordinated.
“The incident happened around 2:00 a.m. They came in and forced people into a vehicle,” she said.
Security personnel responded quickly to a distress call, according to Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Jimoh Abayomi, who confirmed the occurrence.
He revealed that while attempts are still underway to capture the perpetrators, the victims have been saved.
"We are pursuing the offenders after successfully rescuing the victims. I'll provide more information shortly," he stated.
