Remaining abducted Catholic schoolchildren released
Following the release of the last set of 130 victims, all of the students kidnapped from St. Mary's Catholic School in Papiri village, Niger State, have now been freed, bringing the total number of students rescued to 230.
On Sunday, news reporters were informed of the development by representatives of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
For the relatives of the victims, the successful release puts an end to days of worry and uncertainty, and it represents a major breakthrough for the security services engaged in the rescue effort.
After gunmen assaulted the boarding school, the students were kidnapped. This tragedy caused widespread indignation and rekindled worries about the security of educational institutions worldwide.
According to the authorities, coordinated actions by pertinent agencies and persistent security pressure led to the release of all the victims. However, they withheld information about the operation.
As worries about insecurity continue to dominate Nigerian public discourse, the incident has heightened calls from stakeholders for improved school protection and more forceful measures to prevent a recurrence of similar attacks.
