Resident doctors halt strike, give FG two-week ultimatum

Two days after it started, the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has called off its five-day warning strike.  Additionally, the group has given the Federal Government another two weeks to fulfill its obligations.

The doctors had put down their tools on Friday morning but halted operations on Saturday evening, instructing members to return to work today (Sunday).  This was revealed in a WhatsApp message on Saturday by Dr. Tope Osundara, the association's president.

He said, “Some of our demands have been met. The government has promised to look into other issues. Strike suspended; resumption of work tomorrow (today). We did this as a sign of goodwill and to assist Nigerians who are seeking healthcare in our various facilities.”

Before going on strike, the doctors had given a number of ultimatums: a 21-day deadline in July, a 10-day extension that expired on September 10, and a last 24-hour deadline.

NARD stated that it is now granting the government an extra two weeks to fulfill its commitments by suspending the warning strike.
