Sanwo-Olu gives endorse N50,000 relief package for Lagos workers

In an attempt to lessen the effects of growing economic strains, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved a N50,000 relief package for workers throughout the state for the month of May.

The governor announced the measure on Friday during the 2026 Workers’ Day commemoration held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos, themed “Insecurity, Poverty – Bane of Decent Work.”

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, said the payment would be added to workers’ May salaries and would be subject to further review.

He said the initiative was part of the state government’s ongoing commitment to supporting workers across all sectors, noting that Lagos continues to depend on the contributions of teachers, health workers, artisans, and civil servants to sustain its growth.

Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu's deputy, stated that the payment will be included to employees' May paychecks and would be subject to additional review.

He stated that the program was a part of the state government's continuous effort to assist workers in all fields, pointing out that Lagos still depends on the contributions of educators, medical professionals, craftspeople, and government employees to maintain its expansion.

“Lagos is great because of you—the teacher who stays after hours, the nurse who takes a third shift, the artisan who passes on their trade to the next generation,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu stressed that the government must continue to provide workers with tangible help while acknowledging the current economic issues, such as inflationary pressures and global oil shocks.

“For this May, there will be an additional N50,000 for every worker in Lagos State, across board, irrespective of grade,” he announced.

In the next months, he said, the gesture would be evaluated as needed.

The governor also took the opportunity to reiterate his administration's dedication to enhancing public service delivery, infrastructure development, and worker welfare.

He stated that the state administration is still willing to communicate with organized labor, pointing out that maintaining industrial peace depends on union engagement.
