Senate passes FRSC amendment, dieticians council bills

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Act (Amendment) Bill and the Dietitians Council of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill have both been approved by the Senate.

Senate leader and Ekiti Central senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele represented the measures from the House of Representatives.

During Tuesday's plenary, Bamidele spearheaded the discussion and proposed the resolution for concurrence, which was backed by Senator Olalere Oyewumi, who represents Osun West.

The senate then resolved into a committee of the whole to discuss the proposals after they were read a second time following a debate on their broad principles.  Following discussions, both proposals were passed after a third reading.

Despite being mentioned on the order paper, the Federal College of Nursing and Midwifery, Oke-Igbo, Ondo state (Establishment) Bill was withdrawn when the federal government decided not to create any higher education for the next seven years.

The Senate Committee on Judicial, Human Rights, and Legal Matters was tasked with reviewing the Criminal Code Act (Amendment) Bill, which was also on the list.

The modifications, according to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, will increase public health awareness and encourage road safety.

“I hope that the conditions of our roads will be regulated and lead to safety. I also encourage the FRSC to ensure that our roads are safe,” Akpabio said.

He went on to say that public health education would be greatly aided by the new Nigerian Dietitians Council.
