Senate sacks Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as diaspora committee chair
Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the lawmaker for Kogi Central, has been formally removed by the Senate from her position as chair personof the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organizations.
Aniekan Bassey, the senator for the Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District, formally took her post. At the conclusion of Thursday's plenary session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the news.
The action is the most recent in a string of committee leadership transitions involving the member from Kogi Central.
After taking the oath of office as a senator in November 2023, Akpoti-Uduaghan was initially designated as the chair of the Senate Committee on Local Content.
But in a legislative maneuver on February 4, 2025, Akpabio reorganized the committee chairmanship, and she was shifted from Local Content to the Committee on Diaspora and NGOs.
Some analysts speculated that Akpoti-Uduaghan's departure was motivated by political reasons, and the reshuffle caused controversy because it occurred soon after she actively oversaw oil and gas agencies.
