Tanker collides with dispatch rider, crushes him to death in Lagos
An empty tanker that was allegedly traveling at a fast speed struck a dispatch rider along the Motorways inward Estate axis in Alapere, Lagos, resulting in his death.
According to preliminary investigations, the rider was instantly killed at the scene when the tanker, registered under the registration number TTN-776ZQ and bearing the brand "NIPCO," crashed into him.
While other dispatch riders gathered at the scene and angrily challenged the tanker driver, officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, or LASTMA, moved quickly to stabilize the situation.
The motorist was reportedly rescued by LASTMA personnel, who then turned him over to Lagos State Ambulance Service staff for emergency care at a local hospital.
In order to disperse the gathering and restore order, Alausa Division police officers were also sent to the scene.
In response to the news, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, expressed sympathy to the deceased's family and advised drivers—especially tanker drivers—to properly follow traffic laws.
“This unfortunate incident underscores the urgent need for heightened vigilance and collective responsibility among all road users to safeguard lives,” he said.
While the circumstances surrounding the collision are being investigated, the tanker and the remnants of the damaged motorcycle have been placed under police custody.
