Taraba workers declare indefinite strike, to begin August 11

An indefinite strike has been declared by Taraba State's Organized Labor, which includes the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), to begin on Monday, August 11, 2025.

Following a resolution adopted at a Joint State Administrative Council meeting on August 6, the decision was made public on Friday in a joint statement signed by TUC Chairman Comrade Abasu Sule and NLC Chairman Peter Jediel.

The walkout, according to the statement, is intended to protest what labor referred to as "illegality" that the state's Biometric Data Capture Committee is allegedly engaging in.

The unions said that the state administration had ignored their ultimatum and accused the committee of irregularities that had harmed workers.

“All workers, civil society organizations, and the general public are hereby put on notice to prepare adequately and stock their homes with necessary provisions,” the statement read.

To guarantee compliance and efficacy, the labor leaders instructed all NLC and TUC affiliate unions, branches, and units to establish strike implementation committees within their respective Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) right away.  Strike mobilization will start right away, and more instructions will be given as needed.

In response to what it described as an attack on their rights and welfare, the statement called on employees and other stakeholders to maintain their vigilance and solidarity.
