Three Lagos varsities back to work as ASUU calls off strike
Following the suspension of an industrial action by university lecturers, academic activities at Lagos State University, LASU, Lagos State University of Education, LASUED, and Lagos State University of Science and Technology, LASUSTECH, are scheduled to resume immediately.
Students and parents impacted by the disruption were relieved when the Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, announced the decision on Friday following discussions about employee welfare and the execution of unfulfilled agreements.
The union leaders characterized the development in a joint statement as a significant step toward guaranteeing the fulfillment of earlier agreements and securing better welfare for lecturers.
Olusegun Babalola, the coordinator of the ASUU-LASU steering committee, Grace Abimbola, the acting chairman of ASUU-LASUED, and Murisiku Onigemo, the chairman of ASUU-LASUTECH, signed the statement.
The union thanked parents, students, traditional leaders, civil society organizations, the media, and other stakeholders who helped its members during the talks.
The Joint Action Front (JAF), Education Rights Concern (ERC), and Campaign for Democratic Workers Rights (CDWR) were among the pro-worker organizations whose contributions were specifically acknowledged for their advocacy in advancing high-quality public tertiary education.
Along with acknowledging the patience and understanding shown by parents and students during the strike, the ASUU leaders also thanked traditional leaders for their interventions.
