Thunderstorm destroys transmission line

According to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the 132kV Otukpo–Nsukka–New Haven line snapped on September 3, 2025, due to a rainstorm that happened late in the evening.

The general manager of public affairs said in a news release yesterday that the cut conductor had fallen to the ground along the route close to Tower 97.

The statement said, “The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) wishes to inform the public that a thunderstorm that occurred late in the evening of September 3, 2025, caused the snapping of the 132kV Otukpo–Nsukka–New Haven transmission line.

“The cut conductor fell to the ground near Tower 97 along the route.”

She added that while no one was killed, the high-voltage discharge from the fell conductor tragically burned a car parked beneath the transmission line right-of-way, killed two calves along the route, and set fire to a house constructed beneath the transmission line near the tower.

She claims that the TCN, Enugu Region Regional Manager, Engr. Tom Inugonum, and his team went to the scene of the occurrence right away to conduct an on-the-ground assessment of it.
