Troops kill two suspected kidnappers, rescue abducted victims
During a concerted operation in Plateau State's Kanam Local Government Area, troops from the Nigerian Army's 3 Division and the Joint Task Force, Operation Enduring Peace (JTF OPEP) killed two suspected kidnappers and freed two hostages.
Following the kidnapping of two individuals, Ibrahim Manman and Muhammadu Sani, along the Wanka–Dengi route in Kanam, the operation, which took place on Wednesday, encompassed the communities of Kukawa, Shuwaka, Ganjuwa, and Tunga.
Following intelligence, the military engaged the kidnappers on the outskirts of Tunga hamlet, cordoned off the area, and began a rescue operation.
According to Major Samson Zhakom, Media Information Officer of JTF Operation Enduring Peace, “The criminals opened fire on the troops, who responded with superior firepower, neutralising two of the suspects while others fled with gunshot wounds.”
He continued by saying that eight cartridges, a locally made rifle, a pump-action gun, and other equipment needed for the criminals' operations were found after a comprehensive search of their hideout.
The confiscated weapons are still in military custody pending more investigation, while the rescued victims were securely reunited with their families following routine security checks.
In order to disrupt criminal networks and safeguard people and property within the joint operations area, Major Zhakom reiterated the JTF's dedication to ongoing operations.
He emphasized that in order to ensure long-term peace and security in Plateau State and the surrounding areas, Operation Enduring Peace will keep denying non-state actors the ability to operate and applying pressure on criminal groups.
