Truck collides, crushes cyclist to death in Lagos

A truck killed a bicycle rider in Ikeja on Monday, causing a dramatic scene as the driver allegedly tried to escape. This unfortunate event happened in Lagos.

The event, according to witnesses, took place on Monday morning close to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). They claim that the truck struck the cyclist when it was moving quickly and reportedly trying to run a traffic light.

“The truck driver was speeding and did not slow down even when the traffic light turned yellow before hitting the cyclist,” an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), who asked not to be named, said.

“He tried to drive away, but some bystanders quickly flagged down the truck and prevented him from escaping.”

After being taken to a local hospital, the cyclist—whose identity had not yet been made public—was pronounced dead. Hon. Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, confirmed the tragedy, stating that the deadly crash happened at the traffic light corridor inward Airport Road, Ikeja, beneath the LASUTH Bridge.

Giwa revealed that an unwary cyclist and a DAF articulated vehicle were involved in the collision.

He said preliminary investigations showed that the accident happened as the heavy-duty vehicle and the bike, coming from the Maryland axis, tried to maneuver the roundabout under the bridge at the same time.
