Truck driver arrested after crushing Ondo VIO officer
Ayoade Idowu, a 37-year-old driver, has been detained by the Ondo State Police Command after Sesan Adediji, an employee of the Vehicle Inspection Office, was allegedly crushed to death while trying to stop his car for a routine inspection in Akure, the state capital.
The incident happened on Friday at around 9.30 a.m. on Hospital Road, across from Mega Primary School. The 35-year-old officer was hit when the driver allegedly drove off after being asked to provide the vehicle's details.
In a statement released on Friday, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the state police public relations officer, revealed that the driver had been taken into custody while investigations were underway.
According to Jimoh, preliminary information suggested that Adediji and his colleagues were on a routine patrol when they stopped a white Mitsubishi van with the registration number AGL 992 XX for examination.
“The driver initially stopped but allegedly drove off when asked to produce the relevant documents, hitting the VIO official in the process,” the police spokesman said.
According to reports, Adediji suffered severe head injuries and was taken to the Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital, where a physician pronounced him dead.
According to Jimoh, his remains were placed in the hospital morgue for autopsy and preservation.
The officer was trapped underneath the car while residents and his coworkers battled to free him, according to a video of the incident that went viral on social media.
According to an eyewitness, the incident happened while the officer was trying to stop the car.
“He was on the road trying to stop the truck, but we don’t know what happened. Suddenly, we heard the sound that somebody was knocked down. The vehicle rammed over him. By the time people rushed down there, he was in his pool of blood,” the eyewitness said.
Police officers had visited the scene, according to Jimoh, and the case file was anticipated to be moved to the Motor Traffic Division for additional examination.
He promised that a comprehensive investigation would be carried out and that the proper legal action would be taken in compliance with the law.
Drivers were urged by the police command to cooperate with authorized enforcement officers and follow legal traffic instructions.
The statement went on, "No road user should put another person's life in danger in an attempt to avoid routine checks or traffic regulations."
