TUC protests at finance ministry over unpaid allowances
Members of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) protested unpaid allowances Tuesday morning, disrupting official proceedings at the Federal Ministry of Finance.
Operations came to a halt when the protesters, who were wearing red jackets and holding signs, blocked the main gate of the ministry's Abuja offices. There was tension at the ministry compound as a result of the early-morning demonstration.
Due to the union members' refusal to let anyone in and blocking entry points, several employees and guests had trouble getting inside the building.
The protesting workers took over the normally bustling ministry entrance and used chants and placard inscriptions to express their frustration.
Although TUC officials and participants refused to speak to the media, the messages on the placards made it clear that staff allowances must be paid immediately.
Phrases like "Pay Us Our Entitlements" and "No More Delays" were prominently displayed as the protest went on throughout the morning.
