Suspected political thugs allegedly ambushed a police patrol squad on the Ibadan-Ife motorway in Osun State, killing two civilians and seriously injuring two police officers. 

The incident happened on August 24, 2026, at around 11 a.m., while the Divisional Police Officer and the patrol team assigned to the Ikire Division were responding to a distress call regarding the alleged kidnapping of a man known only as Sunkanmi.

The Osun State Police Command said that soon after the officers arrived at the scene, they were suddenly attacked.

One of the officers' AK-47 service rifles was reportedly taken by the attackers after they opened fire on the police officers while they were in their operational vehicle.

According to the Command, the perpetrators then killed two individuals by firing randomly with the stolen rifle.

The deceased were named as Saheed Akinrole, 43, of Adeagbo Compound, Ikire, and Nur? Sobowale, 49, of Odeda Area, Abeokuta.

After receiving emergency care at a nearby hospital, the two injured police officers were referred to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for additional medical care.

During the attack, the attackers also allegedly stole the police patrol car.

The car had several bullet holes and a broken windscreen when it was eventually found by the police after being abandoned.

In an attempt to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack, nine spent artillery shells were retrieved from the scene and stored for forensic examination.
