Two dead in Sokoto boat accident - NIWA

The third fatal boat accident this month has been reported by the National Inland Waterways Authority at the Jaranja River in Sokoto State's Shagari Local Government Area.

On Friday in Sokoto, Mr. Bala Bello, the NIWA Area Manager, informed the News Agency of Nigeria that nine survivors had been rescued and two people had died.

According to Bello, the event happened on Friday afternoon and was caused by carelessness, canoe overloading, and a violation of safety regulations.

According to him, a rescue team that included representatives from the Red Cross Society, the National Emergency Management Agency, the State Emergency Management Agency, and NIWA had been sent to the scene.

Bello stated that as search and rescue efforts were underway to find the missing, the crew verified the number of casualties.

The Area Manager restated that NIWA has been interacting with riverine communities regarding safety protocols, rules, life jacket use, and other water-use considerations.
